You Can (?) Do It!
The title of this post comes from a "legendary" line from Rob Schneider in an absurd number of Adam Sandler films. Why is it that these lines stick with us?Every challenge that came up, Rob's character would inevitably shout out " You can do it!" They were not, sadly, moments of incredible redemption either. Then again, they are Adam Sandler films...
Anyway, moving on now that I've put that in your head.
Self-confidence is an interesting thing especially given the following statement from Jesus:
"Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what He sees the Father doing for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise." (John 5:19)
Sorry Rob Schneider, you can't do it.
We can't do it.
Even Jesus couldn't do it on His own.
This is a key idea to grab onto when allowing formation in Christ to drive missional living (an idea I'm calling formissional) because we are not capable of living missionally until we are abiding in Christ in such a way as to acknowledge that without Him, we have no map.
No plan.
No guidance.
No power.
No strength.
Nada.
To truly abide in Christ in this kind of humility will allow us to see the "greater works" (Jn. 5:20b) of missional movement and will create an echo in our souls that yearns for those "greater works" to multiply.
What can't you do today without abiding in Christ?
