God and the Voices in My Head
This past week, I had one of those weeks.Let me explain.
I’m the kind of guy who gets inside his head too much, many times because what I do at Parkview is about creating, editing, and reviewing content.
Translation: Lots of reading and writing.
Add to that writing a doctoral dissertation and some little blog and there’s a lot of talking going on in my head. I’m only listening to the good voices.
Which brings me to this point – this week I didn’t listen to the good voices. I listened to the ones that told me lies, that filled me with either anger or a lack of self-worth.
Paul speaks to the Philippian folks and says:
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Phil. 4:8)
It makes so much sense – if you fill your skull with this kind of stuff: beauty, goodness, truth, justice, hope - in short, God – there won’t be any hard drive space left for the bad stuff, the destructive stuff.
So, I’m tuning out the bad voices by thinking instead of the things of God and thus leaving no space for distraction. As a friend once said, “It’s much easier to memorize something once you’ve meditated on it for a while.”
How would your day change if you meditated on this passage (Phil. 4:8) every morning?
