What Moves You?
I couldn't move. I was frozen by the sound. Eyes closed. Breathing slowed. Everything stopped.
I was standing in my living room, one hand bracing against a cabinet listening. To what, you ask?
The opening riff of Bon Iver's "Perth." Haunting, beautiful, and rich I was compelled - even possessed - by the sound.
What moves you?
What are those things in life that stop you in your tracks, carry you above the trials and tumbles of everyday life, and remind you that there is a dimension beyond what we can see, taste, touch and smell? Those moments that say "If there's no God, then this makes no sense."
The Caribbean Ocean.
A child's smile.
What are those things that inspire you - that breathe life into you like Ezekiel's dry bones and force you to accept that there may be something going on outside of your control and commission? Something happening in the hidden swells of existence that rattles our rational, logical cages and makes us dream wildly and without a net?
Something that makes us cry at actors pretending to be something they clearly aren't.
Something that causes music to touch an emotional nerve at a place of depth so hidden that we have thoughts and hopes we never had before.
Something that causes grown men to scream themselves hoarse when their favorite team of college students carry a leather, oblong shape across a dark green field.
What moves you?
Is it possible - even in the slightest - that when art & music & sport grab us and thrust us ever upward, we are feeling the reality that Paul is talking about here:
And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, for “ ‘In him we live and move and have our being’... (Acts 17:26-28, ESV)
Is it possible that in those moments when we are moved deeply we are being moved by more than just emotion and instead we're being moved by the echoes of divinity running crazy through the bloodstream of humanity? Say what you want about the art, music, and sport that moves us - it doesn't have to say "God" to point to Him.
What if the entire process of discipleship - the intentional movement into Christian spiritual formation - is fired and fertilized by our ability to be moved and to see that movement as originating in our savior, teacher and friend Jesus Christ and His Father who created us in the first place?
