Three Questions for Your Soul
In recent years, there has been an increased interest in the art and practice of spiritual direction. I have been giving spiritual direction over the last year, as well as pursuing it for myself, and I find it to be something that renews and restores life when we are feeling dead and directionless in our faith.Spiritual direction is basically having someone, a director, who helps to point out the action and voice of the Holy Spirit in an individual's life. It isn't counseling per se because the point isn't to form a plan to overcome crisis. Instead, the goal is confirmation and clarity on what God is doing in the life of an individual.
Today as I was thinking about visiting my own spiritual direction, I realized that we all have the opportunity on a daily basis to do some "direction" with our fellow followers of Jesus. In Hebrews 10:24 it says
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another...
Is it possible that you will have the chance to direct someone today? What if we began to seek out opportunities to spur our family and friends on to "good deeds" of listening to the Spirit of God and following His guidance? But how would we do that?
I want to offer three critical questions that you can use in any conversation to help guide and direct one another in the path of letting our souls and spirits be shaped after Christ.
1. What are you praying for today? How is God responding to that prayer?2. What one thought continues to come to mind for you today? Why is that?3. What theme have you noticed in your reading of Scripture lately? What significance does that have for you?
These questions will help us lead each other to listen to the Spirit of God and receive the direction He longs to give us. Also if you are interested in spiritual direction and you are in the Parkview area or are willing to do direction via Skype, please don't hesitate to contact me.
