A Prayer that Will Wreck Your Day

Recovering from Easter weekend, well, recovering is somewhat negative considering we were neck deep in joy for 4 days at Parkview over the resurrection of Jesus. "He is risen" is the most audacious and world-altering confession in the world today.So as for blogging I'm offering something from someone else much smarter and far more eloquent than myself. 

If you haven't picked up John Baillie's "A Diary of Private Prayer" it is well worth it. Prayers for morning and evening every day, which help us to pray by relieving us of the duty of coming up with our own words. Sometimes that's helpful, especially if you find yourself struggling to pray. Plus, we aren't always the best at challenging ourselves in prayer. I think you'll find the prayer I read this morning to be more than challenging and honestly, I hope it wrecks your day like it has mine.

In a good and holy way of wrecking, of course.

Jesus Christ said: When you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone. O God, give me grace now so to do.

Jesus Christ said: It is more blessed to give than to receive. O God, give me grace today to think, not of what I can get, but of what I can give.

Jesus Christ said: When you give to the poor, don't let your left hand know what your right is doing. O God, grant that what I give may be given without self-congratulation, and without thought of praise or reward.

Jesus Christ said: Enter the narrow gate... O God give me grace today to keep to the narrow path of duty and honorable dealing.

Jesus Christ said: Judge not. O God, give me grace this day first to cast out the beam of my own eye, before I regard the mote that is in my brother's eye.

Jesus Christ said: What does it profit a man to gain the whole world but lose his very soul? O God give me the grace so to live this day that, whatever else I lose, I may not lose my soul.

Finish with the The Lord's Prayer: "And so Lord I pray..."
