How Much Are You Worth?

At the end of last week, Facebook Inc. became a publicly-traded company.Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg consequently became a billionaire 20 times over at the age of 28.

At 34, that makes me feel lazy. I'll get over it.

The news ticker was alive with reports about Zuckerberg's "net worth" after this massive financial gain. I began to think to myself - what's my net worth? I realize it isn't comparable, at least in dollars and cents, but what is it?

The question of worth - the question of how valuable we are - is a foundational question to the formissional life. It's difficult to embody, embrace, and incarnate this gathered and scattered band of Jesus people to the world while staying grounded in what matters most unless we have a strong sense of our own worth and value.

I have returned many times to the passage where I believe we see the foundation for our value and worth:

After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” (Matt. 3:16-17, NASB)

If we are adopted sons and daughters of God, through that revolutionary act of surrendering our lives to Him (see John 1:12), we are heirs to this promise. We are His beloved. In us He is well pleased.

How does it shape your day to realize that your worth doesn't come from anywhere else other than the One who calls you His beloved and is completely giddy over you?
